Commercial Human Spaceflight Operations: Always Read the Manual!

The treacherous landscape of manned spaceflight is fraught with dangers that often escape our imagined reality when dreaming of adventures in space. For those in the industry who conceptualize humankind’s next steps into space, the obstacles of framing the risky endeavors involved with human space flight as an “adventure of the ultimate kind” may be daunting, to say the least. Space is inhospitable, unknown, vast, and immensely expensive to get to for little reward; privatized space can help re-calibrate some of our perceptions for the better.

As private space industry leaders such as SpaceX, XCOR, Virgin Galactic, and others get closer to actualizing crew transport, we see the possibilities that may arise from such ground breaking endeavors. Commercial human spaceflight is a vast new territory bursting with innovative new hardware, designs, operational capability, and purpose. With so many companies competing and working with each other, and without the direct oversight of the our governmental space program, the question arises as to how the industry and the government will facilitate commercial crew development and the subsequent implementation of new and perhaps unstandardized operational procedures.

Through lessons learned from manned crews of the past, personal experiences on space shuttle missions, and with an eye towards the future of this industry, our guest speaker will help us navigate how the development of policy and programmatic oversight will manifest in different scenarios we might encounter in space. We will take a gander at how humans such as ourselves might be recruited in the exploration of the final frontier, operate in space, and ask the questions we were always afraid to have to answer...

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Simone Syed, Scott Norman, and Michael Clive

Note - ALL profit from this event will be donated to the ChipIn fund helping to raise money for our friend and fellow Space Salon member Susanna Schick's recovery from a terrible hit-and-run while riding her bike in Downtown LA.

A note on ticket sales - the LA Space Salon is designed to create a particular quality of event.  We must limit its size, but do not want to turn away any who strongly desire to come.  Thus, we have created a tiered ticket pricing, where ticket prices will increase as we near our target capacity.

Your ticket price is ultimately up to you - be sure to register soon! All ticket sales are through EventBrite; be warned, there will be no tickets sold at the door!

Food: Enjoy light appetizers and drinks with us.  There is a cash bar for beer and wine as well.

Directions: The actual location within the complex is slightly different from where Google Maps will show you.  Follow GPS/online directions to turn onto Moulton, and Abundant Sugar is in the southwest corner of the second large building on your left.  See the map here: http://atypicalart.com/abundant_sugar/

Parking: There is a triangular-shaped parking lot immediately in front of Abundant Sugar, right off Moulton.  You can park anywhere in that area, or on the street on Moulton adjacent to that lot.  Park head in to the curb on Moulton to maximize space.

The LA Space Salon is a new and unique social event designed to be a reliable outlet within the space community for people to engage with one another, contribute their ideas, pose questions, hear from industry leaders, and coalesce efforts towards a cultural permeation of the values we share about space exploration. Our objective is simple: bring space professionals, enthusiasts and entrepreneurs together in an open discussion about our shared future beyond this world.

Each month, we will have a featured guest who will help us explore humanity's path forward into space. These events are designed to be deeply engaging and leave time for plenty of mingling. Speakers start their presentations at 8:00 and will be followed up by a round of audience Q&A. The speaker is followed by LA Space Salon's open forum. All attendees are encouraged to participate in the month's discussion.  Come with your thoughts prepared and ready to share!
